The Hawaiian green sea turtle, or honu in Hawaiian, is the most common species of turtle found in Hawaii. The are native to the islands and can grow to 4 feet in length and over 300 pounds.
The Honu is a guardian spirit and symbol of good luck, endurance, and longevity.
Sea turtles are excellent navigators and some Hawaiian legends say they guided the first inhabitants to the islands.
Another legend tells of the goddess Kaiula, a Green Sea Turtle, who would watch over children playing on the shores. She would transform into a little girl and play among them, watching and keeping them from harm.
